Input data for Fiber Planner projects

Which input data a Fiber Planner project needs, the quickest way to get it with Area Select, and what to check before you generate your plan.

Before FOND can generate your plan, it needs input data: the addresses to serve, and the routes where cable can run. This article covers what a Fiber Planner project needs, and links to the detailed article for each layer.

What your project needs

Layer Required? What it’s for
Addresses Yes The locations your network must serve
Underground path Yes, unless you use aerial Where cable can run underground. In Fiber Planner, this is usually street centerlines.
Aerial spans and poles Yes, unless you use underground Where cable can run overhead
Central office Optional Where the network is fed from. If you leave it empty, FOND chooses.
Parcels Optional Context on the map

At a minimum, you need addresses and underground path, or addresses, aerial spans and poles. You can use underground and aerial together.

The quickest way: Area Select

Use Area Select to import addresses and street centerlines for your area in one step. Street centerlines become your underground path. You can also generate an approximate aerial network from them.

Area Select covers the USA and Canada. If you have your own data, you can upload it instead. See Input data requirements.

Check your data before you generate

A few minutes of checking here makes your plan more accurate:

  • Addresses: every location you want to serve is there, and apartment buildings and businesses have the right AddressType. AddressType decides how much fiber each address gets through the Demand Model.
  • Underground path: there’s no path where you can’t build, such as across railways or major roads. FOND treats every path as a valid route.
  • Aerial: if you generated an aerial network with Area Select, remember that it’s only an approximation built from street centerlines.

Use the satellite map to spot new developments that are missing addresses or streets. See Moving around the map in FOND.

Edit your data

Open a layer’s menu in the Input data step and choose Draw to add, move or delete features. See Drawing tools.

To steer cable onto routes you prefer, or away from routes to avoid, see Path preferencing.
